Mowanjum Art & Culture Centre

The Mowan­jum Abo­rig­i­nal Art and Cul­ture Cen­tre is a cre­ative hub for the Wor­ror­ra, Ngarinyin and Wunum­bal tribes, who make up the Mowan­jum com­mu­ni­ty out­side Der­by, West­ern Australia.

These three lan­guage groups are unit­ed by their belief in the Wand­ji­na as a sacred spir­i­tu­al force and the cre­ators of the land. They are the cus­to­di­ans of Wand­ji­na law and iconography.

The cen­tre hosts exhi­bi­tions, work­shops and com­mu­ni­ty projects, as well as the annu­al Mowan­jum Fes­ti­val, one of Aus­trali­a’s longest run­ning indige­nous cul­tur­al festivals.

The Mowan­jum Muse­um is a place to share and cel­e­brate the cul­ture of the Wor­ror­ra, Ngarinyin, Wunam­bal and Gaam­bera peoples.

Locat­ed with­in Mowan­jum Art and Cul­ture Cen­tre, the muse­um is an impor­tant sto­ry­telling space where vis­i­tors can learn about Wand­ji­na Wung­gurr his­to­ry, pro­to­cols and traditions.

Fea­tur­ing exhibits of sig­nif­i­cant objects from the Mowan­jum Col­lec­tion, as well as mul­ti­me­dia pro­jec­tions and touch­screens, the muse­um is an immer­sive and inter­ac­tive experience.

We are also proud to dis­play the his­toric Sels­mark Col­lec­tion in the muse­um, an excep­tion­al set of dance totems, cos­tumes and musi­cal instru­ments made in the ear­ly 1970s by senior Wor­ror­ra, Ngarinyin and Wunam­bal men and women.

The Mowan­jum Muse­um is a com­mu­ni­ty project that has been many years in the making.

OPEN­ING HOURS: Mon­day to Fri­day — 9am to 4pm 

Group tours of the muse­um can be booked in advance.
