The annual Shinju Matsuri (Japanese for “Festival of the Pearl”) originated from three cultural festivals – Japanese Obon Matsuri, Malaysian Hari Merdeka, Independence Day from British rule in 1957, and the Chinese Hang Seng. Shinju Matsuri rekindles the excitement and romance of Broome’s early days of being a world-renowned producer of South Sea Pearls when the Japanese, Chinese, Malay, Koepangers, Filipino and Europeans flocked to Broome from the late 1800’s to be a part of this prosperity. This unique multicultural population of pearl industry workers joined with the local Aboriginal people and Europeans to work on up to 400 Pearling Luggers that sailed out of Broome.
Broome’s people and businesses have given generously to show their love of Broome over the fifty year life of the Festival and is a testament to the character and culture of this special place. The volunteer Board of Shinju Matsuri is driven by the community and sees the festival as an opportunity to re-educate and inform the community of the cultural heritage of Broome. Ensuring that education and information is passed on to young people and new arrivals will assure that Broome’s unique and diverse identity is acknowledged and remembered through the generations.

Shinju Matsuri - Broome's Festival of the Pearl - has been an iconic part of the regional WA events program since 1970.
A celebration of Broome's unique, diverse culture and history, via a huge program of events that tantalise all senses sight, sound and most of all taste.

Shinju Matsuri Opening Ball
We’re going back to the 80s, baby! Join us for the Shinju Matsuri Opening Ball presented by Dahlia Designs on Saturday 28 August 2027, 6pm - 11pm at The Hub at Town Beach for a jumpin’ night of 80s glory! Nobody puts Baby in a corner at the Opening Ball! Grab your buds and get your best 80s threads on, because we wanna dance with everybody at the 57th annual Shinju Matsuri Festival. Walk like an Egyptian, take our breath away and live your Material Girl dreams. Do the eighties your way, under the stars of Roebuck Bay! Ticket includes a drink on arrival. Food will be available for purchase if you get hungry like the wolf.

Shinju Matsuri Chinatown Feast
Your favourite Chinatown Feast presented by HORIZONTAL FALLS SEAPLANE ADVENTURES returns to Short Street in 2027 on Friday 3rd of September from 5pm! A sell-out festival favourite, this energetic, bustling celebration promises an unforgettable night as you roam the stalls and savour flavours from across Asia. Tickets include food, with beverages available for purchase at the bar.

Shinju Matsuri - The Beach Club
In 2027, the Sand N Sounds beach party will be reimagined. Same epic crew. Same great sound. Same iconic location. Just a little more laid back. Welcome to The Beach Club. For one night only, Friday 10 September 2027, 6pm Matso's Broome Brewery will be bringing sun-soaked beats and ice-cold bevies to the iconic Walmanyjun Cable Beach in Broome. Settle in for the sunset grooves. Say for the beachside beats and easy going vibes. Stay tuned for DJ line-up! Ticket includes select drink on arrival, and food available for purchase.

Shinju Matsuri Sunset Long Table Dinner
You’re invited to the Shinju Matsuri Sunset Long Table Dinner from 5pm on Saturday 11 September at Walmanyjun Cable Beach. One of WA’s most iconic dining experiences, this spectacular evening invites you to watch the sun sink into the Indian Ocean with your feet in the sand and great company around the table. Following a sensational 2026 event, Executive Chef Chamalou Talip and the Cable Beach House crew return to create another unforgettable evening celebrating exceptional food in an extraordinary setting. All inclusive.
