
Staircase to the Moon Dates
Staircase to the Moon is a natural phenomenon that occurs when a full moon rises over the exposed tidal flats of Roebuck Bay | Yawuru Nagulagun. The Staircase to the Moon happens 2 - 3 days a month between March and October.
The Town Beach | Guwarri precinct is a great vantage spot to view the Staircase to the Moon. Another popular spot is The Mangrove Hotel, who often have live entertainment on Staircase night. Other local spots include the Broome Fishing Club, the Broome Golf Club, the Roebuck Bay lookout or take a short walk across the road from Matso's Broome Brewery.
Cygnet Bay, north of Broome on the Dampier Peninsula, also offers staircase viewing locations.
Staircase to the Moon Markets at Town Beach (Hamersley Street) are held from 4pm to 8pm on selected dates. Here you can sample local produce, buy hand made products, a variety of international food, and enjoy the sounds of local entertainers. Night Markets also take place every Thursday night, usually from June to September. Map link for location of the Staircase Markets here.

Experience one of Broome’s most magical natural events at the Fusion Moonrise. As the full moon rises over Napier Terrace, it aligns perfectly with the iconic Fusion sculpture located at the Carnarvon Street roundabout in Chinatown — creating a breathtaking visual that draws photographers, locals and visitors alike. This rare phenomenon only happens twice a year, making it a must-see moment that blends Broome’s rich cultural heritage with the beauty of its natural environment.
Bring a picnic, your camera, or simply enjoy the atmosphere as the night sky puts on a show. The event is a free, family-friendly celebration of art, nature and connection, and a wonderful way to engage with Broome’s vibrant Chinatown precinct under the stars. No bookings are required. Attendees are encouraged to arrive early to secure a good viewing spot and to walk, cycle or use public transport where possible, as traffic restrictions will apply in the area. Special dates and Tides - Staircase to the Moon, Dinosaur Footprints and Flying Boat Wreck dates...
We have created a special dates document that is marked with all of the Staircase to the Moon dates, dates the Gantheaume Point Dinosaur Footprints are visible (on tides less then 2.16m) and the Catalina Flying Boat Wrecks (visible on tides less than 0.86m).
