Hugh Brown has been photographing the night skies of the Kimberley and Pilbara for almost 30 years. Over that time, he has published nine bestselling coffee table books and spent much of the past two decades of experience, working on projects in some of the world’s most remote and challenging locations, across more than 30 countries.

The Kimberley remains both his home and his passion, and he is excited to offer unique photography experiences in Broome, Western Australia.

Hugh offers Broome Astrophotography Tours which he schedules around lunar conditions. When the moon and stars align, the Astrophotography Tours operate, beginning before sunset and continuing into the night, as guests photograph dusk skies and the Milky Way as it rises. This tour caters to a maximum of 10 guests, with a minimum of six required to run. Plus, after your tour, Hugh will email a photo of your evening’s night sky to keep as a beautiful memory.

Photographers of all skill levels are welcome, from complete beginners through to experienced professionals. Hugh’s goal is to share his extensive knowledge, techniques, and photography processes with guests, including the cheat sheets and practical hacks he uses in his own work. Guests are encouraged to photograph alongside him, learn through observation, or simply enjoy the experience of being under the Kimberley night sky.

When conditions are less suitable for astrophotography, Hugh runs his Broome Half Day Photography Tours. Beginning at 2.30pm, this 4‑hour tour takes guests to some of Broome’s most photogenic and lesser-known locations, before finishing at carefully selected sunset and dusk vantage points that visitors would be unlikely to discover on their own.

With a maximum of four participants on the half day tour, you will receive genuine individual attention, time to ask questions, to experiment and to absorb. There may even be the opportunity to meet and photograph Broome’s remarkable characters along the way.

Portraits Under the Stars is a premium portrait session beneath Broome’s spectacular night sky. Guests join Hugh for around 90 minutes while he captures stunning portraits under the stars before continuing his own astrophotography work into the evening. It’s perfect for couples, newlyweds, families or anyone who wants a portrait that goes beyond the ordinary. Prior to our shoot I will contact you to discuss clothing and colour choices. Transfers are included, and depending on your schedule, Hugh can return you to town afterwards, or you’re welcome to stay while he completes the night sky component of your portrait. Depending on the time of year, this can take anywhere between two and four hours.

Guests can choose to enjoy a glass of wine and nibblies too!

Photographers of all abilities are welcome on these tours, as well as visitors who want to experience the raw, ancient beauty of Broome’s landscapes at sunset, and the breathtaking spectacle of its night sky once the light fades.
