Solar Eclipse in Broome - Thursday 20th April 2023

So, what is an eclipse? The partial or total blocking of light of one celestial object by another. On Thursday April 20th 2023, Broome will experience a partial solar eclipse (93% visible) where the sun is obscured by the moon.

NASA's description is helpful for astronomy beginners to understand the difference between a total solar eclipse and a partial solar eclipse.
A solar eclipse happens when, at just the right moment, the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth.
Sometimes the Moon only blocks part of the Sun's light. This is called a partial solar eclipse. Other times, the Moon blocks all of the Sun's light. This is called a total solar eclipse.

Either way, we are sure this celestial event will be something to remember.

Please DO NOT look at the eclipse without protective glasses.
It is never safe to look directly at the sun, and doing so may cause eye damage. If you do choose to use methods such as eclipse glasses, make sure you understand the risks.
Lions Outback Vision will be at the event teaching us the safest ways to enjoy the solar eclipse.

About the partial solar eclipse:
The process of the moon moving across the face of the sun takes three hours, but the brief moment when the sun is nearly completely obscured by the moon will only last a total of 62 seconds. This is will happen at 11.52am. Check out an animation of the eclipse here
